“Where the source is deep, the flow is long; where the roots are deep, the plants grow.” This is a famous quotation written by Bai Juyi (a poet of Tang Dynasty), and is also a true reflection of the cultural history for a thousand years since the founding of the Wuyue State.

“‘The flowers in the fields are blooming, and you can come back slowly by appreciating the flowers.’ This is the Chinese romance passed down from the Wuyue State.” Liu Jingjing (Party Committee Secretary and Researcher of Artistic Research School of Communication University of China) considered that Wuyue culture has a long history and is a magnificent wave in the vast river of history. A simple letter that sends love to each other can becomes a love song after a thousand years, which shows the charm of Wuyue culture and the depth of its roots.

To inherit and develop regional characteristic culture, we should understand it and grasp it first. Liu Jingjing considered that the core of Wuyue culture is to “promote literature and morality, pursue humanistic pragmatism, and blaze new trails in a pioneering spirit”. The founding monarch of the Wuyue State in history, Qian Liu was awarded the title of dukedom and made great achievements in wars. He did not continue to open up new territories and fight for the Central Plains, but instead took the responsibility of protecting the territory and the people as his own duty. He “tamed” the Qiantang River Tide, dredged the West Lake, and built water conservancy projects. King Qian Shotting the Tide” tells the legend of flood control, and reflects King Qian’s “benevolent rule” of governing the country.

With stable social environment and advanced social productive forces, the Wuyue State was once transformed into a place of enlightenment, and presented a flourishing age when “the fragrance of flowers in the house has enchanted countless guests”. It is also the place of Zhejiang where literati come forth in large numbers. The Qian’s family motto coming down from King Qian covers the contents in four aspects (“individual, family, society and country” with 600 words, and becomes the inexhaustible source to cultivate capable brains for Qian’s family in the long history. Qian’s family has made significant contributions to China in the aspects of economy, society, culture and technology in modern times, and is worthy of the words “humanistic pragmatism”. There are more achievements in “pioneering and innovation”. With such spirit, Qian Liu started from scratch and created the strong Wuyue State. “During the period of governing Hangzhou for 86 years and governing the country for 72 years”, the Wuyue State continued to expand the external exchange scope and extend the foreign trade range. Porcelain was one of the most important items traded. ST color porcelain created during the Wuyue State can be called the national treasure due to its delicate texture, dignified vessel shape, smooth line, and natural characteristics.

To inherit and develop regional characteristic culture, the most important thing is to be bold in innovation and breakthrough. Liu Jingjing believed that Lin’an is now a quality city of systematized cultural brands, innovative cultural models and diversified cultural achievements. Tianmu brands like “Tianmu Ideological and Political Project for Juniors”, “Tianmu Cultural Conservation”, “Tianmu Stacked Mountain · Wuyue Millennium”, and “Tianmu Township Creation” have rich local characteristics, form a series of iconic achievements, and have vigorously pushed forward the high-quality development of various works. In terms of mode innovation, Lin’an created the first rural cultural hall, which has become a new mode for building rural spiritual homes. Lin’an has implemented the “Tianmu Ideological and Political Project for Juniors”, and built the “four-full” new education pattern of full social participation, full curricular integration, full-process management, and full-chain cultivation. Lin’an utilizes the digital twin technology of Tianmu Cultural Protection to effectively explore a new mode for comprehensive protection of cultural relics in the county. Lin’an has released the first public brand of village scenic areas (“Tianmu Village”), and took the lead in implementing the market-oriented operation mode for village scenic areas… All these have strongly proven the cultural prosperity and innovative development of Lin’an.

To break through the cultural “circle”, Liu Jingjing also gave corresponding suggestions. She believed that the power to lead the way in culture comes from the youth. She hoped that Lin’an can further utilize its unique advantages in culture, ecology and location and fully combine the preferences of young people, to promote the creative transformation of the Wuyue culture, to develop products that meet the aesthetics of young people and cover fields like clothing, accessories, home, beauty, and cultural creation, to combine with artistic creation, tourism and business, and to make the Wuyue culture visible, sensible and knowable by enhancing the planning and communication via diversified breakthrough means.

With toughness, bamboos can bear the heavy wind; with toughness, the articles can be spread for thousands of years. In the process of promoting the cultural prosperity in the whole district and spiritual richness of all the people as well as building the cultural highland of Wuyue, our district has actively inherited the essence of the excellent history and culture, grasped the roots and souls, and held on to the roots and elements; we continue to promote the new development and new achievements, which have become the powerful force for the district to make a leap and take the initiative of integrating with Hangzhou in development.
