Citizen representatives from all over the district who love reading gathered together on the evening of April 19 to launch the 2024 Library Night and the 8th Nationwide Reading Month in Lin’an District. District leaders Zu Ha’er and Hu Liaoming attended the activity.

“The refreshing breeze on the river blows away melancholy, accompanied by the faint ink fragrance of books, reading brings me profound influence and positive changes; the bright moon in the mountains illuminates the place far away from home, accompanied by the faint ink fragrance of books, reading brings me profound influence and positive changes...” The singing of the song Reading Illuminates Life opened the prelude to the event. With students reciting Qian Family Instructions, chanting Butterflies in Love with Flowers, and performing the sitcom Millennium Meeting, the facile and graceful beauty of ancient costumes were perfectly combined with the scholarly fragrance of books, as if the audience were brought back to the long history of Wuyue Kingdom. Themed as “Appreciating Wuyue Culture and Inheriting Classics”, the activity aimed to recreate the glorious historical moments of the Wuyue Kingdom by savoring classic poetry and telling anecdotes of literati.

In the activity, prizes were awarded to outstanding readers of the library and the “Bookish Community (Village) and Bookish Family” of Hangzhou City for the year 2023, and 5 public welfare reading leaders were hired. The atmosphere of nationwide reading is becoming increasingly strong, and the construction of “bookish Lin’an” is constantly advancing. According to the statistics of the district library, the library served 596,404 readers in 2023, lent out 489,263 books and drew 5,466,128 visits of its digital resources. Among all types of books, literary books were the most popular among readers, with a borrowing rate of up to 52.33%.

The Nationwide Reading Month Activity of “Appreciating Wuyue Culture and Inheriting Classics” will last from April to May. The activity will mobilize 24 library branches, 11 urban libraries, 5 neighborhood reading spaces and 310 mobile libraries in all towns and streets of the district to organize nearly 100 cultural activities, in order to bring a reading carnival to citizens and further cultivate a social trend of loving book reading, reading good books and being good at reading.

In the activity, bookish koi readers were also selected by lucky draw, and the lucky readers who successfully made wishes in the “New Wish” mailing activity were also announced, and presented with wish gifts.
